78. Queens of the Stone Age – Feel Good Hit of the Summer

07/10/2009

78

Just to clear things up (with thanks to Wikipedia):

Nicotine is an alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants. Valium possesses anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, skeletal muscle relaxant, and amnestic properties. Vicodin contains hydrocodone and paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, or more completely, para-acetylaminophenol. Marijuana refers to any number of preparations of the cannabis plant. Ecstasy is a psychoactive drug that produces entactogenic, psychedelic, and stimulant effects. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug that has a depressant effect. C-c-c-c-c-cocaine is both a stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant.

Reader, you win five points for every one of the above you’ve taken, and double your tally for every combination you’ve done. If you are Josh Homme, however, you simply win – the Queens lead singer reportedly did this exact cocktail during his millennium eve party, and then celebrated such a Herculean feat of rock’n’roll excess by recording a big, dumb, rock’n’roll song about it all. There’s little to say about Feel Good Hit that isn’t crushingly obvious, but if there’s been a more gloriously stupid rock song written this decade, I’m yet to hear it.

QOTSA were responsible for one of my Top 5 gigs of the decade, definitely. It was originally cancelled when Mr. Homme got ill, was re-scheduled for 7/7, the day of the London bombs. And when it did finally get played a month or so later, they did two gigs in one night, early show at Kokos (which I attended), late show at Brixton. They filmed both and turned the results into an excellent DVD too.

Good choice, although I’ll be going for a different Queens song later in my countdown.
